Article Overview
Optical cables are primarily composed of silica-based fibers, polymer coatings, and protective jackets, each with distinct density characteristics that influence cable weight and mechanical performance.
Core and Cladding Materials
The core and cladding of optical fibers are typically made from ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), often doped with germanium to adjust the refractive index for light guidance . Pure silica has a density of approximately 2.2 g/cm³, while germanium-doped silica slightly increases the density depending on the doping concentration. The cladding, surrounding the core, is also silica-based but may include additives like boron or chlorine to reduce the refractive index, which can slightly alter its density . These materials are extremely lightweight relative to metals, contributing to the low mass of optical fibers.
Coatings
Optical fibers are coated with dual-layer UV-cured acrylate: a soft primary coating and a hard secondary coating . These polymer coatings have densities typically in the range of 1.1–1.3 g/cm³, significantly lower than the silica core. The coatings protect the fiber from mechanical stress, moisture, and microbending, while minimally increasing the overall cable weight.
Strength Members and Armoring
To enhance tensile strength and durability, optical cables often include aramid yarn (Kevlar), fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) rods, or steel armoring . Aramid yarn has a density of about 1.44 g/cm³, FRP rods range from 1.5–2.0 g/cm³, and steel armoring is much denser at 7.8 g/cm³. The choice of strength member affects the cable's weight, flexibility, and suitability for aerial or underground installation.
Outer Jackets
The outer protective jackets are made from HDPE, LSZH, or other polymeric materials . HDPE has a density of approximately 0.95 g/cm³, while LSZH (low-smoke zero-halogen) compounds range from 1.2–1.4 g/cm³. These jackets provide environmental protection against UV, moisture, and chemical exposure, and their density contributes to the overall cable mass.
Summary
The overall density of an optical cable is a composite of its components: the high-density silica core and cladding, the lower-density polymer coatings, and the optional high-density armoring. Typical single-mode fiber cables without metallic armoring are lightweight, often less than 50 kg/km, whereas armored cables can exceed 100–150 kg/km depending on the materials used. Understanding the density properties of each material is crucial for mechanical design, installation planning, and performance optimization in telecommunications and industrial applications .
